Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito 01-13/13

OK, the time has come to upgrade this nice series (AniDB).

Video: x264 712x476 4:3 23.976fps CRF13 (1107-1584kbps)
Audio: Japanese 2.0 Stereo FLAC

Three subtitle tracks:
Subtitle track #1 - translation by Shinsen-Subs.
Subtitle track #2 - translation by Shounen-Ai.
Subtitle track #3 - translation by Miyuki Fansubs.

The subs were OCRed using VideoSubFinder, which produced surprisingly good results for all three hardsubs. The only editing I did (except of fixing OCR errors) is changing Hadzuki (SHS)/Hatzuki (S-Ai)/Hatsuki (M-F) into Hazuki, because this romanization is displayed in the show itself:

Just for fun, I used different fonts for the main dialogue in 3 subtitle tracks, similar to what was used in the original hardsubs (SHS -> Nyala, S-Ai -> ITC Korinna, M-F -> Teen). The colors, however, are all set to white with black outlines.

Some notes about translations:

Shinsen-Subs - liberal English translation, no honorifics, "Onee-chan" becomes "Sis" and so on. This is the default track.

Shounen-Ai - if you want honorifics or don't like Nyala font, watch this track. Translation is more or less similar to SHS track.

Miyuki Fansubs - quite a lot of lines are translated differently. Since it's not very likely that both SHS and S-Ai translators consistently made similar errors, this track is probably less accurate.

Some funny demonstrations:

SHS: Love is something that makes the pain stop.
S-Ai: Love makes pain go away.
M-F: Love is something that you'd get hurt about.

SHS: So don't bother fixing it.
S-Ai: So just leave it.
M-F: Very well, then. Go ahead and fix it.

SHS: Come right home, OK?
S-Ai: Come home right after school, okay?
M-F: We'll party until it's night time!

etc etc.

The video is unfiltered. Since SHS release was also based on DVD source, the difference in video quality is not as great as in case of TV-rip -> DVD-rip upgrades, but still it is better. Additionaly, this re-release has a benefit of being 100% softsubbed, features lossless audio and includes complete archive of fansub translations.

Here's screen comparison with SHS hardsub.

  3. Hi Thanks for the release but i cant open the file.
    Im using k-lite codec pack

  4. Try CCCP. It is built specifically for playing anime and usually causes the least amount of problems. Though I just tried the file on a PC with K-Lite Media Pack Standard and it played fine too (using MPC).

  9. Yeah, I'd say there are some visual improvements from SHS to this, at least in the form of less blur and better background textures. Just curious, are M-F's ridiculous and lulz-worthy TL notes included in the M-F track?

Shameless advertising: For those who liked this show and want to see more work by the same studio and staff, be sure to check out my release of Touka Gettan. Heck, the YamiBou characters even make a cameo appearance in one episode.

  10. @Zalis: All M-F notes are included. The only thing not included is the text that is displayed in every M-F's episode before the video starts. This one:

Originally a H game released by ROOT at the end of 2002, this Anime series can be quite confusing if you didn't know the background story. Long ago, only a single being by the name of Adam existed in the universe, Adam wanted to create things to fill the universe with, hence Lilith (Ririsu) was born. With her, Adam created many worlds safe for people to live in. To populate those worlds, Eve was born. With Eve, Adam created humans who spread across the worlds. But soon, other beings of great power (Gods) appeared and started to wage battle against each other. Fearing his creations would be destroyed forever, Adam created the Great Library, where each book was a record of a separate world. And in order to protect the Great Library, Yami was born…

Aww. I like that opening text. It was helpful when I first this with M-F's release. You should make a patch to have that back in!

  17. @Anonymous: There's always text documents and such. M-F actually added time to the videos to add that note, which would've meant more encoding work, more space taken, etc. I'll suggest that they add an attachment with that note when this gets offered on BakaBT.

  20. I guess with DDL sites pretty much dead these days, most of the DDL links got taken down right? I can't even seem to find a way to download these eps anymore. Should have done it all back in the day...

Is there a different page with all the episodes somewhere?

    1. Since DDLs are dead, there are two ways to download the episodes:
      1. bakabt
      2. irc bot

  21. Oh, do you guys have an IRC channel? Must have missed it. Or do you have the eps up on a different bot?

  22. Thanks a lot for your work! I really enjoyed this series, it was like a mix of Touhou and TwilightZone.
